Bert's parents played a very important part in influencing him as a person. They instilled in him a strong work ethic, and a firm belief in education. His religion as a Roman Catholic established his moral character where he learned the difference between good and evil and how to treat people.
He moved away from San Antonio to Angleton, Texas in 1976 and worked for BASF Corporation for over 30 years then retired from the petro-chemical industry in 2006. He loved the finer things in life, dancing to country and western music, reading about history and sports. He watched the Houston Astros, the Oilers and the Texans. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing and being out in the Hill Country.
He decided in his senior 1969 year in high school that one day he would run for congress and became politically active in 1990 and started laying out his plans for his Congressional campaign then ran for U.S. Congress in 1992. In his campaign he discovered who he was and where he stood on a lot of issues. It was one of his dreams and was glad he ran.
He later met and married his best friend Vira S. Garza from Russia in 2002. He felt marrying Vira was the best thing he had ever done and she completed his life. He taught his wife to speak and read English and to drive a car.
He is preceded in death by his father, Remedios L. Garza. Bert is survived by his wife, Vira S. Garza; mother, Alicia U. Garza; sister, Cora Martinez; brother, Homero Garza, MD, and his wife Sandee Marion; sister, Maria Groussman and her husband Dean and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, uncles and relatives.
