Irene Mary McKinney Prescott died peacefully in her sleep on May 14, 2010 at the age of 83, surrounded by her children at The Village at Incarnate Word. She was born on August 26, 1926 in El Paso, TX to Hance W. McKinney, Sr. and Loretta Irene McMahon McKinney. She grew up on the family farm in El Paso, graduated from high school at Loretto Academy, and attended the University of Texas at El Paso where she was voted Freshman Favorite. She transferred and received a degree in Physical Education from the University of California, Berkeley. She began her career as a "Powers Girl" model for a prominent New York City modeling agency in the late '40s before returning to teach in El Paso. She later taught in Austin where her husband, James D. Prescott, a U.S. Military Academy and Texas A&M graduate attended the University of Texas Law School. As a military wife, she and her family traveled extensively, meeting and keeping numerous and cherished friends from around the world.
She was an active and proud member of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas as a direct descendant of Abijah Hogan Dickson, who was killed in the Battle of Goliad, Delta Delta Delta Sorority, St. Monica's Guild, St. Peter's Catholic Church, and the Military-Civilian Club of San Antonio. She loved her family and friends, and before her illness, was a regular at the annual Army/Navy game party, Beethoven Hall gatherings, Sunday night at La Fonda, and her cherished Bible Study group of 20 years. Irene was deeply religious and faithful to her Christian beliefs. She had a quiet inner strength and streak of McKinney pragmatism; Que Ser Ser was her response to almost any conflict. She is survived and will be greatly missed by her six children: Sally Prescott of Gaithersburg, MD, Dorothy Shreve and Lori Prescott of San Antonio, Mary Werner Mark of Colorado Springs, James Prescott, Jr. of Sweden, and Josie Fultz Dwight of Bemidji, MN; grandchildren: Michael Shreve Tiffany; Nathan and Rachel Werner; Ma, Adrian, Gabriel and Johannes Prescott; and Elena, Roberta and Ben Fultz; only great-grandchild Ella Shreve; brother-in-law Charles E. Cheever, Jr. Nancy; sister-in-law Joanne Cook McKinney; and cousin Josephine Lewright Wilkin. Her loving Cheever and McKinney nieces and nephews and their children will remember Irene for being "super sweet" with a caring and patient nature and for how much she enjoyed a good laugh.
Irene was preceded in death by her parents, beloved sister Sally Cheever of San Antonio; brothers Hance W. McKinney, Jr. of Fredericksburg, and James McKinney of El Paso.
In lieu of flowers, the Prescott family would be honored by a donation in her name to St. Jude Children's Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or to the charity of your choice. The family wishes to thank her caregivers Delia Sanchez, Edie Deaven, Bernice Lopez, Eleanor Forman; Dr. David Talafuse; Dr. Steven Kalter; and the staffs of The Village at Incarnate Word and Amedisys Hospice who supported Irene and her family through her final days. The Reverend John Markey will be officiating a Memorial Mass on Wednesday, May 19, 2010, 10:30am at St. Peter Prince of the Apostles Church, 111 Barilla Place, San Antonio.
