

Irene taught at a parochial elementary school and she gave 30 years of dedicated service in special education at SAISD high schools.
She taught catechism and was a Girl Scout leader.
Irene served on the Board of Regents at Texas Lutheran University and was a member of the Catholic Daughters of America.
She volunteered for the Crisis Hotline at the Free Clinic and served as a volunteer at the Witte Museum, with recognition as Volunteer of the Year in 1998.
Irene was a descendent of one of the First Families of Bexar County.
After a series of health problems, she moved to The Heights Assisted Living Community, where she enjoyed an active social life with her many friends.
Irene was preceded in death by her parents Joseph G. Montez and Margarita Planas Montez, her birth parents Albert Valdez and Antonia Planas Valdez, her first husband Lt. Anthony S. San Miguel, and her second husband Humberto L. Quintanilla.
Irene is survived by her daughters: Margaret Maggie Garza and husband Arcadio III, Mimi Quintanilla and husband David M. Schmidt, Beatrice Quintanilla-Abercrombie, and son Commander Humberto L. Quintanilla II and wife Caren.
Grandchildren: Alyssa and Eric Garza, Kendra and Juliana Abercrombie, Justin, Daniel, and Gregory Quintanilla, Catarina Caty, and Santiago Schmidt. Pallbearers: Eric Garza, Jody Buntin, Anthony San Miguel, Russell Cardenas, Edmund Trevino, and David Deluna. Honorary Pallbearers: Arcadio Garza III, Jesse Rodriguez, Raul Acosta, and Ted Giannone.
The family of Irene M. Quintanilla would like to express their sincerest gratitude to her team of doctors: Kristi Clark, J. H. Higuchi, Joseph McCracken, Ronald Hamner, and her friend Laura Suarez.
A reception at Irene's home immediately follows the service. A family interment service will be held at a future date.
