

Irma Hernandez Campesi, a beloved teacher, and cherished member of the Brownsville community, passed away peacefully on June 27, 2024, in San Antonio, Texas, just shy of her 95th birthday. Born on June 30, 1929, in Brownsville, Texas, Irma lived a life marked by dedication to education, love for her family, and an unwavering spirit of generosity.
Irma spent her professional life as an inspiring teacher, touching the lives of countless students with her passion for learning and her nurturing guidance. She was a pillar in the educational community, known for her commitment to her students and her involvement in various associations that aimed to better the profession she so dearly loved.
Prior to working in public schools, she worked on program proposals for the University of the Incarnate Word (San Antonio) and other parochial schools. She worked for the Edgewood ISD as the Public Relations Director and the Southwest ISD as Public Relations Director, Federal Programs Director and Bilingual Director until her retirement. Due to her skills, talents professionalism and creativity she received numerous State, Federal and Local recognitions and worked closely with Bilingual Education officials in the Texas Education Agency and the Region XX Educational Service Center. Her major improvements within Bilingual Education were recognized upon her retirement.
Family was the cornerstone of Irma's life. She was preceded in death by her parents, Francisca Garcia Tovar and Napoleon Hernandez Sr., brothers, Robert Hernandez, Napoleon Hernandez, and sister, Rachel H. Champion. Her memory will be cherished and kept alive by her loving daughter, Paola Campesi, and sister, Mary Ann Longoria (Juan), who will miss her deeply.Irma's legacy is one of kindness, education, and the love she bestowed upon her family and students. Her warmth and wisdom will be remembered by all who had the pleasure of knowing her. As we say goodbye to Irma Hernandez Campesi, we celebrate the remarkable life she led and the indelible mark she left on the hearts of those around her. Her spirit will continue to inspire, and her memory will be treasured forever.
