Aug. 15, 1957 – March 8, 2015
Isidro Ray Reyna Sr., fondly known to family and friends as Chumpy, passed away at 11:02 a.m. on March 8, 2015, following a long, hard-fought battle with kidney cancer. He was 57. Born in San Antonio, Texas, on Aug. 15, 1957, Chumpy worked hard to provide for his family and create a wonderful life for his two sons – Isidro Jr. (Goon) and Alex. A 1976 graduate of Phillis Wheatley High School, Chumpy’s studies in auto paint and body shop propelled him to a steadfast career in the automotive industry. He enjoyed antique cars, particularly the 1932 Ford Model A, was a fan of the San Antonio Spurs and Dallas Cowboys, and could cook up an appetizing pot of beans. Chumpy’s selfless spirit was all encompassing, lending a helping hand to those in need and setting an example for his children to follow. He loved his many pet dogs throughout the years – his favorite being Charlie – who’d follow him everywhere. He requested privacy throughout the duration of his illness, as he didn’t want people to see him in a weakened condition. Although his struggle was hard, God ensured he left this world peacefully and was able to say goodbye to the ones he loved. In the year and half before his passing, Chumpy spent quality time with his sons, creating memories that will last them a lifetime. Whether they were watching action movies until 5 a.m., rebuilding an antique car, making late-night taco runs, or cooking beans and lengua for Sunday breakfasts complete with barbacoa and eggs; one thing was certain, laughter was rolling, stomachs were full and hearts were happy. Chumpy was preceded in death by his father Martin A. Reyna Sr. He is survived by his sons Isidro Ray Reyna Jr. and Alex Michael Reyna (Jessica Najarian), mother Pauline Flores Reyna, brother Martin A. Reyna Jr. (Diana), sister Irene Garcia (Pete) and grand dogs Chief and Gus Reyna. A celebration of life service will be held at Sunset Northwest Funeral Home on Sunday, March 15, 2015, at 4 p.m., 6321 Bandera Road in San Antonio. A reception will follow at the Leon Valley Conference Center, 6421 Evers Road, Leon Valley, TX. While tears are undoubtedly expected, the intent is to celebrate Chumpy’s life, share memories, laugh and smile. His sons wish to thank all family and friends for their support, condolences and prayers. It is with Chumpy’s memory, God’s blessings and your thoughts that they will indeed get through unquestionably the toughest time in their lives.
