Jack was born on April 11, 2006 at Fort Hood, Texas. In true Army brat fashion, he arrived in the middle of his Dad’s 2nd deployment. Jack was the happiest child, always laughing, and developed an early love of all things construction and trains. He loved Handy Manny, Imagination Movers, and Blues Clues, loved fixing things and tinkering, and developed a lifelong love of playing and building Legos. Jack never wanted to follow the Lego instructions, always preferring to build new creations from his mind.
In 2010, Jack became a big brother and was so proud of his little brother, James, and was always a huge helper. Jack and his family were stationed in Kansas and he enjoyed exploring a new state, visiting Union Station Science Museum in Kansas City, and seeing the leaves change colors in the fall. He experienced his first snowstorm that winter in Kansas, and loved the snow, making snowmen, sledding, and playing until his fingers were frozen!
Next, Jack spent the rest of his elementary school years at Fort Benning, Georgia. He loved trampolines, Super Mario Brothers, swimming, Legos, Star Wars, ice cream, watching a good rainstorm, the beach, trips to the Great Wolf Lodge, and all things ocean life and squids (he wanted to be a marine biologist!).
2017 brought Jack and family to Fort Sam Houston and back to his beloved Texas. Jack began attending Robert G. Cole Middle/High School on Fort Sam, and his patriotism and love for all things Military really took off. He participated in the middle school choir, joined the Robotics Club, and the Leadership and Character Development Corps (LCDC) program. Jack had a love for all things science and technology, Subnautica, warships and tanks, military history, Dr. Who, Agents of Shield, Star Trek, and Babylon 5, but he also appreciated the classics like Gilligan’s Island and The Addams Family. He could soak up any documentary on The Universe, Oceans of the Deep, or Unexplained Alien Phenomena and then excitedly recite what he learned. He was passionate about video gaming, especially Minecraft, which he still played almost nightly with his dad and brother.
Last year, Jack was thrilled when his high school started up its inaugural E-Sports Club. Jack was also a member of the Dell Student Tech Crew and expressed an interest in working for Dell someday as “tech support." He was a huge helper, always ready to troubleshoot family and friends’ tech troubles, and eagerly kept up with the latest in technology advances and updates.
He was also a proud member of Cole’s JROTC and was honored to be on the Color Guard and Marksmanship Team. He achieved the rank of Cadet Sergeant, earning the Perfect Attendance Ribbon, LET Service Ribbon, LCDC Participation Ribbon, Good Conduct Ribbon and the UIL Ribbon and was thrilled to be selected as one of Charlie Company's squad leaders. He also joined Academic Decathlon at the encouragement of his Chemistry teacher and was looking forward to going to Corpus Christi to compete in the spring.
Jack had so many interests and passions. He loved all kinds of Mexican food, especially Alamo Cafe and Lopez Mexican Restaurant. He had plans to work at Chipotle next summer. He loved roller coasters (the faster the better!), sharing ridiculous memes from obscure parts of the internet, and acting out classic Looney Tunes cartoons with James. But he was also a deep thinker, ready to engage in thoughtful discussions about quantum warp drives, Dyson spheres in space, worm holes, and time travel.
Jack was always an integral part of James’s therapy sessions, and growth over the years. He would eagerly help James practice social skills, play a game during a therapy session or tag along for an outing, and was always patient and eager to learn new techniques and ways to help his brother.
Jack enjoyed volunteering at the USO with his mom, Wreaths Across America with his dad, and the church’s pumpkin patch with the whole family. He was also blessed with a loving and supportive extended family - his Mimi and Baba, Grandma and Grandpa, aunts, uncles, and cousins, whom he enjoyed making so many memories with! He fiercely loved his dog Max and loved showing off his pictures to all his friends. Jack was brilliant and unique, loud and silly, immensely creative, loved to sing and dance, loved holidays, especially Halloween, and all things festive and fun. He marched to the beat of his own drum. With a huge heart, a bigger smile and a sharp wit, he will be remembered, always.
Jack’s beautiful smile and memory will forever be cherished by his father, LTC (Ret.) William Brent Harrington, mother Lesley Ann (Cervantes) Harrington, and his brother, James Drake Harrington of San Antonio, Texas and by his Grandparents Bob and Judy Harrington of Clayton, Louisiana; and Hector and Virginia Cervantes of Sugar Land, Texas, and so many dearly loved relatives, teachers, and friends.
In remembrance of Jack’s life, the family requests any charitable donations are sent to Wreaths Across America or SNIPSA, the San Antonio animal rescue where Jack’s beloved dog, Max, was adopted.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.SunsetNorthFuneralHome.com for the Harrington family.
