Jack W. Pool, D.D.S., Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon, died on Wednesday, August 16, 2023, at age 77. He was born on May 7, 1946, in Fort Worth, Texas, to Jay and Jane Pool. Jack was the oldest of three brothers and was followed by Fletcher and Scott.
Jack’s formative years were spent in Fort Worth. He attended the same elementary and high schools as did his parents, even having some of the same teachers. Jack loved playing sports, especially basketball, at Amon Carter High School. Prior to his senior year, Jack’s family moved to San Antonio and he graduated from Robert E. Lee High School.
Jack then attended Trinity University, where he was a Triniteer. He graduated in 1968, receiving his Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics. While at Trinity, he met and dated the young woman who would become his wife, Dianne Bauerle. Jack and Dianne were married on August 8, 1970, and they enjoyed 53 years of marriage.
As the Vietnam War was ongoing, Jack served his country as an Officer in the United States Army. After his honorable discharge, Jack attended The University of Texas at San Antonio Health Science Center School of Dentistry (now known as UT Health San Antonio School of Dentistry). He graduated in 1975 with the degree of Doctor of Dental Surgery and completed his residency program in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Jack then went into private practice for 35 years, retiring in 2013. During this time, Jack was an active member of First Presbyterian Church, where he served as an Elder.
A hallmark of Jack’s life was his love for Dianne. Their family was complete with the birth of Jeff in 1978. Jack, Dianne, and Jeff enjoyed a close and loving family relationship. Jack understood the importance of family and he was intentional in his roles as husband and father. Jack’s and Dianne’s family life was enhanced when Jeff married Jennifer and further blessed when Tiegan, Jeff and Jennifer’s daughter, was born. A new chapter in Jack’s life began when he became a grandfather, known affectionately as “Doc.”
Jack was a good man, a good husband, a good father, a good father-in-law, and a good grandfather. Jack strived to be the best he could be in his profession, his faith, his larger family relationships, and his friendships. His younger brother describes Jack as someone who made every gathering better, that he did not want to be the center of attention, but to contribute. His youngest brother remembers how Jack taught him everything he knew about sports. Everyone who was lucky enough to know Jack remembers his wonderful sense of humor, his great wit, and that he had the rare gift of making others laugh.
Jack lived his life with honor, integrity, and honesty. The greatest lesson he received from his parents and grandparents was being taught right from wrong; he lived accordingly and passed that lesson on to others. Jack was the person, sometimes the only person, who stood up when others needed to be reminded of how to act. This was all part of who Jack was and how he lived. He was a good man.
Jack is survived by his loving wife, Dianne; his son and daughter-in-law, Jeff and Jennifer Pool; his granddaughter, Tiegan Pool; his brother, Fletcher Pool, and husband, Alfredo Avalos; his brother and sister-in-law, Scott and Alicia Pool; and Dianne’s family.
