Jacqueline (Jackie) Harris Sanner went home to be with the Good Lord the morning of August 8, 2021. Born in 1950, to Col. Shelby Jackson (Jack) Harris and Clothille Harris. Jackie was the third of four daughters. She developed a love for adventure and beautiful places early on since her military family moved frequently around the United States, including beautiful Alaska, which became a state while she was there.
Jackie attended 8 schools in 12 years, including Heelan High School in Sioux City, Iowa, and graduated from Fayetteville High School in Fayetteville, Arkansas. She received a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from the University of Arkansas and was a proud member of the collegiate sorority Kappa Kappa Gamma. In college, Jackie joined the U.S. Army Nurse Corps with her father proudly attending her induction ceremony. As an Army nurse, she completed her Master’s Degree as a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner at the University of Colorado’s first PNP program in the nation. She served as a captain in active duty and later as a major in the U.S. Army Reserves.
Jackie loved to learn and to help others learn. After her Army career, she made her home in Texas. She was a Scott & White Hospital Pediatric Nurse Practitioner and served on the nursing school faculties at Columbus College, University of Texas at Austin, University of Mary-Hardin Baylor and Central Texas College, while continuing direct patient care. Later, she spent 10 years caring for students in the Austin Independent School District. Her expertise and huge heart for the students made her a superb school nurse. She also started her own business, Baby Basics, helping young parents and healthy babies.
In her private life, Jackie was a fitness enthusiast with incredible endurance. She impressed her family and friends each year on her birthday by running, walking or swimming her age in miles.
Jackie loved the beauty of her garden, the natural world, arts, culture and reading. She could always be counted on to know when a local museum had a cool, new exhibit. Her friends called upon her to bring “Vitamin F” and inject fun into every circumstance. She was a woman of strong, Christian faith who prayed for others faithfully. During her years in Austin, she worshipped at the Church of Glad Tidings, and after moving to Universal City, she worshipped at Cornerstone Church in San Antonio.
Above all, Jackie will be remembered as someone who lived her life with her heart. She was thoughtful and appreciative of the experience of living, and always reached out to those in need.
Jackie is preceded in death by her parents and brother-in-law, Al K. Mustin. She is survived by her three sisters, Jan Ford Mustin, Penny Hicks (Philip), Susan Buckner (Mark), and their families, including 6 nieces and nephews: Allison Ann, Michael, Dorothy (Rohan and their daughters), Jon Mark (Michelle and their son), Joshua and Grace.
The family will receive friends at a visitation at 10:30 a.m. on September 16, 2021 at Porter Loring Mortuary North, 2102 N. Loop 1604, San Antonio, TX.
