Jacques Guy Baillargeon, Sr., MD, age 85, passed away unexpectedly in San Antonio Texas on December 9, 2025. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle. Jacques was born on January 30, 1940, in Woonsocket, Rhode Island to Laurent and Cecile Baillargeon, and was raised—along with his three brothers and his sister— with a strong sense of their French-Canadian heritage. After graduating from Mount Saint Charles Academy in Woonsocket RI in 1957, he attended Assumption University in Worcester Massachusetts. Following college, Jacques attended Saint Louis University Medical School, graduating in 1965, followed by an internship at San Diego County Hospital in 1965 to 1966 and a residency in psychiatry in Kansas University (KU) from 1966 to 1969. Next, from 1969 to 1971, he served as a Major and as the Director of Psychiatry in the US Army at Fort Hood, Texas.
In the early 1970s, Jacques moved with his family to San Antonio, Texas, where he began a career on the faculty in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. During this period, he also served as Director of Psychiatry at the Veterans Administration hospital in San Antonio. In 1982, Jacques opened a private practice in General Psychiatry. Over the next 44 years, he brought healing and comfort to thousands of his patients and their families in San Antonio and surrounding areas.
During the 1970s and 1980s, Jacques, along with his wife Judy, raised their two sons in San Antonio. He was a terrific father, taking his boys on camping trips across the state in Indian Guides and coaching their sports teams. Throughout his life, Jacques was devoted to his four siblings, but he was especially close to his youngest brother Larry, for whom he was a role model and best friend. In 2000, Jacques married his devoted and loving wife Shelley; this year, they celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary. Together, Jacques and Shelley cherished their role as grandparents to Sophie, Griffin, and Billie; and organized family trips to beautiful places including Jackson Hole, Banff, and Bar Harbor. Jacques was an avid cyclist; and he enjoyed following the stock market, collecting stamps, and watching tennis and NFL football. He also had a lifelong fondness for classic movies and musicals. Jacques loved his vocation as a psychiatrist, and he especially valued his close team of colleagues including Judy Zurita, James Redmond, the late Janet Grant, and so many others. Over the years, he formed lasting (often decades-long) bonds with his patients and their families.
On Tuesday December 9, Jacques passed away in his office, at his desk, in that brief intermission between patients, no doubt reflecting for a moment as he would often do, before making his way to the door and greeting his next patient with a smile.
Jacques is preceded in death by his parents, and brothers, Gilles and Andre. Jacques is survived by his wife, Shelley Baillargeon; his sons, Jacques Baillargeon Jr. and wife, Gwen of Waco; and Marc Baillargeon and wife, Christine Moign-Baillargeon of Paris, France; his three grandchildren, Sophie Baillargeon of Santa Monica, Griffin Baillargeon of Galveston, and Billie Moign-Baillargeon of Paris, France; his sister, Madeleine Flynn; his brother, Laurent Baillargeon; his nephew, Robert Baillargeon; his great nephew, Robbie Baillargeon; and his nieces, Jennifer Flynn, Kimberly De Avila, Judith McEntee, Bridget Medeiros, and Kathy Crowe.
The family will receive friends from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., on Sunday, December 21, 2025, at Porter Loring Mortuary North.
Graveside will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Monday, December 22, 2025, at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to UT Health San Antonio in memory of Jacques G. Baillargeon, Sr. MD, 7703 Floyd Curl Dr., Mail Code 7835, San Antonio TX 78229 (attn: Amanda Liccione).
