Mack, a lifelong Texan, was born in Port Arthur in 1936, and spent many of his formative years in Yorktown.
In his youth, Mack was an accomplished musician, and began playing saxophone professionally at the age of 16. After attending North Texas State for his undergraduate degree and earning his Juris Doctor degree from the University of Texas Law School, he practiced law in San Antonio for many years, eventually “retiring” into the real estate business. He fervently supported social justice and tirelessly defended the rights of free speech and expression. Mack was a gifted storyteller, stayed loyal to the South Texas culture that formed him, and remained patiently optimistic about the Longhorns and the Spurs.
He deeply loved his family. Among his greatest joys were attending the annual Ausburn Family gathering in Port Aransas and Decoration Day at the historic Salt Creek Cemetery in Davy, Texas. The cemetery, part of a small Texas town founded by Mack’s great, great maternal grandfather, David Haldeman, rests many generations of Mack’s family, including his beloved mother, Neva Hopper Patteson.
A fiercely private and independent soul, Mack faced chronic illness in his final years of life with strength and bravery.
Mack is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Edith Ausburn; his children; Lauren Ausburn Floyd (and Jeff Floyd), John Ausburn (and Martha Bugg Ausburn), Paul Ausburn, Brian Ausburn (and Ruth Steinle Ausburn), Adam Ausburn (and Leslie Komet Ausburn), grandchildren; Draco and Phoenix Floyd, Audrey Ausburn Selber (and Peter Selber), Aaron Ausburn (and Maggie Plifka Ausburn), Maggie Ausburn, Emily Ausburn, Ethan, Madeleine and Peyton Ausburn, great-grandchildren; George, Bridget and Eleanor Selber, John Aaron Ausburn Jr., former wife; Mary Ausburn, and one tiny white poodle named Rene.
A memorial for family and friends will be held at Lady Bugg Farm, 1287 County Rd 314, Floresville, TX 78114, on Saturday, May 1 at 11:00 AM. Social distancing protocols will be observed.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The San Antonio Food Bank or the charity of your choice.
