A lifelong native of San Antonio, James was born May 25, 1926, to James A. and Laura Mayer Carney.
Upon graduation from Brackenridge High School in 1944, he immediately enlisted in the U.S. Navy. After serving in World War II 1944-1946, he returned to San Antonio, and attended Trinity University.
In 1948, he married his one and only sweetheart, Betty Jo Northcutt of San Antonio. He retired from Kelly AFB after 31 years.
Next to his family, his greatest joy in life was his love of music. James was a talented and avid musician, playing trumpet and valve-trombone in numerous dance bands around the city. In the 60's he owned and operated a music store "Carney's Turntable". He loved jazz and the sounds of the Big Band era.
Hunting and fishing, poker night with his buddies and the monthly Brackenridge 'Bald Eagles Lunch Bunch were his other joys in life. He was also a volunteer at Methodist Hospital gift shop for 10 years.
He will be remembered as a kind, gentle and caring person devoted to his family and friends.
James is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Betty Northcutt Carney; his devoted daughter, Terri Carney Binkley and her husband, Peter A. Binkley; his beloved granddaughters, Katherine Binkley and Jessica Binkley; one sister, Helen Carney Beyer; sisters-in-law: Dottie Burris and husband, Grover L.
