His long life was filled with many more happy days than most people deserve. A gentle man blessed with a loving family and many good people whom he could call his friends, he thoroughly enjoyed a full life and always proclaimed his love for this great country. He proudly served as a command pilot of a B-29 bomber during WWII. His young crew of eleven men called him the "Old Man" as he was the oldest at 27 years old.
He had a strong Christian faith, and was blessed with three treasured children, Kyle Chandler, Kellis Chandler, and his late daughter, Karen Chandler Clark. A great loss in his life was the death of his brother and best friend, Dr. Jack Chandler, who died in 1996. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Billie Nelson and Elizabeth Shannon. J.B. is survived by his wife, Letha Chandler; sons, Kyle Chandler and Kellis Chandler; longtime family friend, Bob Dean; and family members, Robert and Susan Clark, Betty Lou Chandler, Howard and Michelle Smith, Lee and Vickie Smith, Mike and Michele Smith, Amy McCourt, and Tammy Smith. His family also included numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
J.B. graduated in 1937 from Edison High School and then attended St. Mary's University. His entire career began in 1937 with Dean and Company of San Antonio, where over the years he helped enumerable people establish and run their own business. He retired in 1983 as the President of Dean and Company. During his many years of membership, he served as President of San Antonio Finance Association, President of San Antonio Kiwanis Club, President of San Antonio Executives Association, and President of Boysville. In the 1960's, he also served on the Finance Committee of St. Andrews United Methodist Church.
The family extends their thanks to Dr. Gabriel Ortiz and his staff for their care for Mr. Chandler over the many years. Thanks also goes to the staff at Gentiva Hospice.
