James Earl Creel Jr., age 77, passed away peacefully on June 7, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on July 22, 1947, in Bandera, Texas, to James Earl Creel and Laura Ann Creel who preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Genelita Creel, and their four daughters: 1st daughter, Christine Bernal, her two daughters and one son, Katheryn, Christopher, and Sarah, the 2nd daughter Denise and Gerald Smith, her two sons Daniel and Chanteal, their children Mathias Douglas, Daniel Jr., and Azariah; and Denise’s youngest son, Elijah Dotson; the 3rd daughter Barbara and William Gardner, son William Gardner Jr., and the 4th daughter Cynthia Creel and fiancé Paul Cerna, and daughter Mia. He also leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
In his later years, James greatly appreciated his role as a grandparent. He valued his grandchildren and family every moment, consistently willing to be involved in their lives and provide his affection and guidance. James was proficient with computers, utilizing his skills to enhance his picture collections, share family experiences, and maintain connections with loved ones. He enjoyed dining out with his family and particularly treasured the time spent at home with his wife, Genelita, during his well-deserved retirement.
James served in the United States Air Force from 1966 to 1986, retiring as a Technical Sergeant. Over his 20 years of service, he received numerous awards, including the Air Force Commendation Medal, Outstanding Unit Award, Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Overseas Long Tour Ribbon, Longevity Service Award Ribbon, and Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon.
During his military career, James worked as a refrigeration and cryogenics technician. He applied his skills in this field. He is noted for his commitment to his family, his service to his country, and the quiet strength and wisdom he shared with others.
A visitation for James will be held Tuesday, July 1, 2025 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Sunset Funeral Home, 1701 Austin Highway, San Antonio, TX 78218. A funeral service will occur Tuesday, July 1, 2025 at 12:00 PM, 1701 Austin Highway, San Antonio, TX 78218. A committal service will occur Tuesday, July 1, 2025 at 1:30 PM at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery, 1520 Harry Wurzbach Rd, San Antonio, TX 78209.
