He was born on October 5, 1941, in St. Martinville, LA, to James and Mary Darnell. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Engineering at the University of Texas in Austin, and a Master of Science in Soil Mechanics at the University of Houston. His professional career carried him to many states including Alaska, which he dearly loved.
James had a passion for competitive long distance running and completed several marathons, including the Boston Marathon. He was a devoted husband, dad, and grandpa, and his compassion for others led him to support a number of humanitarian causes.
He was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include his wife, Mary Jane Darnell; a son, Jonathan Darnell and wife Leann; 2 grandchildren, Mackenzie and Carson Darnell; a daughter, Jennifer Darnell; 3 sisters, Joan Valentine, Kathleen Kelly, and Julie Darnell; and 5 brothers, Charles Darnell, David Darnell, John Darnell, Thomas Darnell, and Mark Darnell.
