

Jimmy grew up in the Southeastern US, living in Georgia, Tennessee, Alabama, and Florida. Following high school, he entered the Army Air Corps and became a liaison pilot, after which he enrolled in Georgia Tech and received a degree in Industrial Engineering.
He came to San Antonio in 1952 to work for Maverick Clarke and became president in 1964. In 1973 he joined Morton/Southwest as Executive Vice President, then became a commercial Real Estate broker with Bob Cooper Properties and his own firm, Jimmy Elrod Properties.
Jimmy was active in community affairs, serving as chairman of the North San Antonio Chamber, military affairs chairman of Greater San Antonio Chamber, vice president of Greater San Antonio Homebuilders, served on Target 90 steering committee, a member of both the Downtown Lions Club and the NW Rotary Club, on the board of Metro YMCA, and numerous advisory boards. He was a member for 9 years and president of NISD trustees, and an elected member of the State Board of Education for 10 years where he was a member of the Governors Select Committee on Public Education. In 1988 the Jimmy L Elrod Elementary School in the NISD was named in his honor. He was a member and deacon of Manor Baptist Church, and since 2000 was an active member of Woodland Baptist Church.
Jimmy was predeceased by his wife of 65 years, Shirley Fletcher Elrod, in 2018. He is survived by his two children, Doug Elrod of Las Vegas, NV and Debbie Elrod Triesch and husband Billy of Pipe Creek, TX, grandchildren Ryan and Lauren Triesch, Thomas and Anna Elrod, and nephew and niece Scott and Melissa Fletcher.
