

James “Jim” Thomas Grimmett, age 81, passed away on Sunday, December 11, 2022 in San Antonio, Texas. He was born in Clarksville, Texas to Stina Leon Pierce Grimmett and James Andrew Grimmett.Jim enlisted in the Texas Army National Guard in 1959. In 1961 he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and proudly served for 28 years. Upon enlisting in the Air Force, he was assigned to the Telecommunications Wire Maintenance career field. He served in 3 major air commands in Japan, Vietnam, Iceland and Germany as well as 5 state-side bases. Progressing through his career, Jim became a First Sergeant in 1980 where he served as the assistant to the commander. He was awarded Senior Noncommissioned Officer of the Quarter 3 times and First Sergeant of the year in 1981 and 1989. Jim served in 5 Vietnam campaigns receiving 3 Vietnam medals and 11 medals overall throughout his career. They include the Meritorious service Medal with 3 Devices, Air Force Commendation Medal, Air Force Achievement Medal, Air Force Good Conduct Medal with 8 Devices, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award with 8 Oak Leaf Clusters and V Device, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Device, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with 4 Devices, Air Force Training Ribbon, Air Force Overseas Service Short Tour Ribbon with 1 Device, Air Force Overseas Service Long Tour Ribbon with 2 Devices, National Defense Service Medal, Air Force Longevity Service Ribbon with 5 Devices, NCO PME Graduate Ribbon and Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon. He retired from the Air Force in 1989 with the rank of Senior Master Sergeant (SMSgt USAF Retired).Jim is preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Martha and brother-in-law, Grover Henry; sister Evelyn Lyons; son, James Shelton Grimmett and grand-daughter, Elizabeth Grimmett.He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Donna Grimmett of San Antonio, Texas; sister and brother-in-law, Ruby and Herbert Stout of Snyder, Texas; daughters, Shelly MacNair (George), and JoDee Grimmett (Tim Gagliano) of San Antonio, Texas; grand-daughter, Rebecca MacNair of Grapevine Texas; daughter-in-law, Dawn Grimmett; grand-son, James Mason Grimmett and great-grand-son, Elliot Grimmett of Lubbock, Texas.Jim loved family gatherings, especially if Donna made her delicious pies for all to enjoy. His family will always remember his joy in telling jokes, woodworking (especially making crosses), watching western movies and eating biscuits and gravy.
