James Floyd Mahler (Jim, Dad, Papaw) born in Roseville, MI., February 15, 1931, passed away in San Antonio, TX, January 11, 2014.
While stationed in Maxwell Field in Montgomery, Alabama he met and married the love of his life Dorothy (Dot) Louise Williams. Together they traveled the world and raised 4 children. In the early years Jim worked 3 jobs to provide for his family.
After retiring from the United States Air Force as Msgt with 22 years of service he went to work at the National Bank of Commerce setting up the Master Charge department retiring as a Vice President. Jim was a family man first, foremost and always. He firmly believed in the principles of "family first" and passed that on to three generations.
Nothing gave him more enjoyment than being around his family. His favorite times were large family get togethers and spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. While his kids were young, many times you would see him grabbing a catcher's mitt and teaching his sons the art of pitching a baseball in the backyard or on a field managing their little league teams; whether it be in the United States or overseas.
He and Dot spent many hours sitting on bleachers watching ball games, high school, college and eventually watching their sons', Mickey and Rick's, major league games. He continued this tradition throughout his life supporting his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He and Dot never missed any of their kids', grandkids or great grandkids school or extracurricular activities. Jim was an avid golfer. He spent many hours at the Lackland Golf Course and later in life you could find him golfing with his brother-in-law Bert, hitting the links at Devine.
Jim and Dot have been married for almost 65 years; 46 together here on earth and another 19 after Dot was called to her eternal home. They are together again at last.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy; parents, E.H. and Gertrude Mahler; son, Rick Mahler; grandson, Christopher Mahler; and brother-in-law, Bernard Williams.
Jim is survived by daughter, Vicki Luff and husband, Larry; sons, Mickey Mahler and wife, Annette, Steve Mahler and wife, Lilani; daughter-in-law, Sheryl Mahler (Rick), Sue Thane; brother-in-law, Bertram (Bert) Williams; 17 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; 1 brother; 2 sisters; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visitation will be on Tuesday, January 14, 2014 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Porter Loring on McCullough.
