Laland attended Beacon Hill Elementary and graduated from Peacock Military Academy. He then enrolled at Texas A & M graduating in 1954 with a degree in Engineering. He was then off to Milwaukee to work for Allis Chalmers as a field specialists. After 2 cold winters, Laland came back to the warmth of San Antonio and went to work for his father at San Antonio Brake. There he built up a family business with his hard work and dedication. He worked with his father until his death, taking over the business himself in 1980. Eventually his two sons James and Tom joined him and they continued to grow the business together expanding to 3 locations. He was a tireless worker and lived his life for the Company, coming in everyday for the last 61 years. He was very proud of San Antonio Brake and to all his employees he would say to "keep on smiling."
He met his future wife, Anita Gilbert on a blind date and they were married September 3, 1960 in San Antonio where they were blessed with three children Erin, James and Tom. He was a devoted husband and father and enjoyed seeing his children and grandchildren enjoy the fruits of his labors. Nothing gave him more pleasure than sitting on the back porch of the family lake house watching his granddaughters laugh and play, while talking to his children.
He was a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason with the Albert Pike Lodge 3 1169, member of the Alzafar Shrine, Alzafar Arab Patrol, former director of the Royal Order of Jesters Court # 60. In addition he was former President of the Council of Fleet Specialist and the Automotive Wholesalers of Texas.
He was preceded in death by his parents and after 49 years of marriage, his wife, Anita on June 24, 2010.
Laland is survived by his three children, Erin Braune and her husband, Tim, James McCormick and his wife, Kathy, and Tom McCormick and his wife, Kayde; three grandchildren, Nicole, Whitney and Grace.
Special thanks go to Rosario Ojeda who has been a devoted housekeeper, assistant and friend and to whom the family owes a great debt to in her service to Anita and Laland.
