

He graduated from Texas A&M as an electrical engineer and US Army second lieutenant in 1937. He served in the US Army Air Corps and became part of the US Air Force until his retirement as a colonel in 1968.
He endured the hardships of the Great Depression and served his country during three wars. He devoted his life to his family, his church and his country. He was a Texas Aggie to the core, first as a student and member of the Aggie band, then later as an active alumnus.
He took great pride in his grandson, Cory, and granddaughter, Bunny, following him in the Aggie tradition. Although his activities had been limited in recent years, daily visits from Bunny and his daughter-in-law, Sheila, were a source of great enjoyment to him.
Throughout his life, he had been an avid pilot, handball player and golfer. He combined a keen intellect with the highest ethical and moral standards. He was an example to all that knew him.
Colonel Steele was preceded in death by his wives, Patty, Rose and Mary, as well as his sisters, Dorothy and Lillian. He is survived by his son, Jim, and daughter-in-law, Sheila; grandchildren Bunny, Cory, Carmen and Jimmy; and sisters, Jessie, Rosa Belle and Christine.
