A memorial funeral service will be held at Porter Loring North in San Antonio, TX on September 8th at 6PM EST. Jane will eventually be interned at the Columbarium at Arlington National Cemetery alongside her beloved husband Maurice Paterson Birkhold who died on December 5th, 2015.
Jane was born in Fitchburg, Massachusetts on July 25th, 1935, to Angela Marie and Charles Frederick Malley. Jane graduated with a degree in accounting from a local college. She started her career working for the US Army at Fort Devens, MA where she first met Moe.
Jane and Moe were married on September 18th, 1960. They were happily married for over 55 years before Moe passed away on Dec 5th, 2015.
Jane and Moe led exceptionally interesting lives raising a family while serving their country in a variety of exotic countries, during volatile and often hazardous circumstances. Jane and Moe’s first two children were born in Miami, where Moe was posted during the Cuban Missile Crisis and the Bay of Pigs debacle. They subsequently moved to Frankfurt, where their third child was born. Their next posting was in Benghazi, Libya which ended when the American Embassy was overrun, forcing Jane and the three young children to evacuate to Naples, Italy. After eventually being reunited with Moe, the family moved to Tegucigalpa, Honduras in time for the Soccer War. Their next stop was Jerusalem, where they lived on the West Bank of Palestine near the town of Beitunia, during the Yum Kippur War. The family was subsequently posted to El Salvador during the early days of a violent civil war. Their final posting was New Delhi, India where Moe unfortunately suffered a serious work-related injury leading to the family’s return to the Northern Virginia.
Jane had a passion for traveling the world, eating exotic food and volunteering with a variety of children’s charitable organizations near their home at Lake of the Woods, Virginia. Jane’s ability to connect with people, her passion for her family and her ability to truly enjoy life is how her family will remember her.
Jane is survived by her three children, Sue Tindal, Steve and John Birkhold and their spouses along with ten grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren, and numerous other family and friends.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be given to the Alice C Tyler Village of Childhelp in Lignum, Virginia or any other charitable organization.
