As the granddaughter of the composer, Oscar J. Fox, Janelle was introduced to classical music at an early age, which gave her a life-long love of classical music and the San Antonio Symphony. She was proud to be a fifth generation Texan and graduated from Jefferson High School in San Antonio and then attended the University of Texas, where she belonged to Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority. She married Joe B. Tye, Jr. shortly after his graduation from the U.S. Military Academy. She loved the military life with Joe and enjoyed the years traveling with her children and participating in their many activities, including swimming teams and scouting.
After many moves, the Tye’s returned to San Antonio, where Janelle quickly became involved in the musical world. Over the years, she served as president of the San Antonio Symphony League and The Tuesday Musical Club and on the boards of the San Antonio Symphony, the Texas Association of Symphony Orchestra Leagues, and the Opera Guild. In addition to her musical interests, Janelle was dedicated to serving the city of San Antonio. She served as the civilian president of the Military-Civilian Club and the Live Oak Garden Club and served on the boards of the Children’s Habilitation Center and the Daughters of the Republic of Texas Mission Chapter. She taught Sunday school and was a member of the church altar guild and vestry. She especially enjoyed founding and co-chairing the annual Children's Christmas Pageant.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Joe, and it is only fitting that she joined Joe in heaven on this day, June 25, which would have been their 73rd wedding anniversary. Her parents, Nellie Fox and Francis Bowen, and her sister, Mary Francis Bowen, also preceded her in death. She is survived by her sons Joe B. Tye III (Sally) of Solon, IA, Steven Tye (Jackie) of Winter Park, Fl, and Allen Tye (Karla) of Jackson, MS, and her daughter, Nancy Tye-Murray (David) of St. Louis, MO, her seven adored grandchildren, Annie Tye, Doug Tye, Erin Tye, Jessica Tye, Shane Tye, Ellen Murray, and Aubrey Murray; and her brother, William Fox Bowen of Silver Springs, MD. Janelle loved her family with all her heart and cherished her many friends. She counted every day a blessing. Her family gives heartfelt thanks to the staff of the Army Residence Center, where she lived happily and comfortably for over 15 years.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you celebrate her life with a donation to the Church of Resurrection, 5909 Walzem Road, San Antonio, TX 78239, or a donation to the Magik Theatre, 420 S. Alamo St., San Antonio, TX 78205.
