Janet Mortland Mabry was born in Hardin, Illinois on April 20, 1933 and passed away peacefully on October 19, 2017 surrounded by her children Sandra Mabry Ozols, Guy William Mabry, Jr., Kimberly Mabry Garza, "her fourth child" Courtney Janet Mabry, and many of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. There were four generations of love in the room as Mom transitioned from life.
Mom was very proud to have grown up on a farm during the depression. This hardscrabble upbringing definitely shaped her into the strong woman we all looked up to and admired. Mom was honored to be a descendant of Captain Thomas Mortland, whom she always claimed to be the first to navigate a steamboat down the Mississippi River. Her favorite stories to tell were of her memories of her uncles Bruce and Tom, and her grandmother, Janet Bruce Mortland (Gummy). Mom loved Gummy so much that we all carry the stories of her in our hearts; even though none of us ever met her.
Immediately after graduating from High School, she moved to Omaha, Nebraska to attend business school. In true Janet fashion she quickly realized she already knew what they were teaching so she chose to pursue her own direction. She lived in a boarding house while working and enjoying life with her roommates away from the farm. She later met our dad, Guy W. Mabry, and they were married in October, 1953.
The Mabry family was stationed in San Antonio, Texas in 1962 where Janet remained the rest of her life. Determined to have a career and education, Mom's Civil Service career began in 1963 at Medina Air Force Base. During this time, Mom also went to night school for multiple years while working full-time and raising her family. She graduated from Southwest Texas State University in May of 1980 with a bachelor's degree in Business Management. Throughout her career, Mom was able to serve at every military base in San Antonio. Mom was very proud of her accomplishments and promotions throughout her career. Mom loved working, and her success was evident as she progressed through the ranks to retire as a Logistical Manager in 2000.
She is preceded in death by her father, George T. Mortland, Jr., her mother, Velma Conner Mortland, her brothers, George "Punji" T. Mortland, III, John "Jack" Mortland, and James "Jim" Mortland , and the father of her children, Guy W. Mabry, Sr.
Janet Mabry is survived by her children: Sandra Mabry Ozols, Guy William Mabry, Jr., and Kimberly Mabry Garza; her grandchildren: Tara Ozols Hurst, Daryn Mabry, Courtney Mabry, Eric Ozols, Brandon Mabry, Melissa Mabry Welch, and Gena Ozols; her great-grandchildren: Michael, Gerilynn, Caitlin, Daryn Jr., Jackson, Sydney, Alexander, Emma, Adahlin, Cameron, Finnian, and Lane; and her sister, Joan "Spike" Mortland Lombar.
Mom will be greatly missed but she will always remain close to our hearts.
