Jan Davis, age 80, was at peace with death after enduring an exhaustive battle with Mesothelioma. Her bright mind, brave spirit, easy laughter, and beautiful smile will be greatly missed by her family and many loving friends.
Jan was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota to Gunnar and Alice Erickson. She honored their Scandinavian heritage throughout her life. After graduating from Edina High School, she attended The University of Minnesota at Duluth. In 1964, Jan moved to San Francisco where she worked for Southern Pacific Railroad and attended classes at the San Francisco Art Institute. While at a social function she met Ted Davis, with whom she explored the Bay Area, the Wine Country, and the Sierras.
Jan and Ted married in March 1969, and they moved to Houston, Texas, where they raised sons, Jason and Jed. Jan was a hands-on mom. She also taught early childhood development classes at Memorial Drive Methodist Church. Years later, the Davis’s move to San Antonio proved to be a positive transition in their lives. They joined Alamo Heights United Methodist Church where Jan served as a Stephen Minister, taught Sunday School classes, and participated in Bible studies. She became an active member of Las Amigas, The Live Oak Garden Club, Friends of Communities in Schools, the Opera Guild Education Committee which brought opera to local schools, and the Assistance League. Jan also volunteered in an art therapy program at Bexar County Jail which had been designed to aid the female population. However, Jan was definitely most passionate about serving as a docent at the McNay Art Museum for 25 years. The museum community filled her life with forever friends who shared her love of art and inspired her creativity.
Jan was a loving daughter, wife, mother, and grandmother (Gran Jan). She was preceded in death by her parents and son, Jed, who died in 1999 after enduring a decade-long coma from a catastrophic head injury. She is survived by her husband, Ted; son, Jason (Allison); grandchildren, Ryan and Tyler; brothers, John (Jie) and Jerry (Sue) and their children, KerstenTerry (James), Rob Erickson (Joyce), Jenn Hartle (Nick), and Matthew Erickson (Ashley).
The family appreciates the loving care provided by Mireida Castro of Suncrest Hospice. In lieu of flowers, Jan suggests people share a simple act of kindness or donate to the McNay, Friends of CIS, or any local charity of their choice.
