Jeanne I. Carey passed into the everlasting arms of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Tuesday, March 18, 2008 from complications of Alzheimer's disease. She is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Leonard Patrick Carey, her parents, William and Helen Irwin, her older brother, Bill Irwin, and an infant son and daughter. She is survived by her loving son, Patrick Irwin Carey, his wife Michelle Garibay-Carey; and granddaughters, Caitlin Camille Carey and Mia Patricia Carey. She was born Helen Jeanne Irwin on December 3, 1923 in Terre Haute, Indiana. Her family moved to San Antonio when she was a small child. She graduated from Brackenridge High School in 1941. Jeanne worked as a legal secretary until she married Leonard P. Carey on September 20, 1947 in Madison Square Presbyterian Church. Leonard and Jeanne enjoyed dancing to the music of the Big Band era at local clubs such as Shadowland The Roaring 20's, the Kit Kat Club, The Olmos Club, The Seven Oaks, and the Kelly AFB NCO Club. They became the proud parents of Patrick on July 26, 1955 and from that time on, Jeanne devoted her life to being a homemaker. She was the original "soccer" mom taking Patrick to all of his sports events and school band events. Jeanne was a devoted mother and faithful servant of her Lord. For many years, she was an active member of Madison Square Presbyterian Church. In recent years, she joined Oxford UMC to worship with her family. She also stayed connected to her Class of 1941 Brackenridge HS reunion group. She loved her faith, her family, animals, nature, music, movies, reading, crossword puzzles, driving her Cadillac, and being an independent woman. Her family wishes to thank the wonderful staff at Hamilton House, Nancy Ortiz with Senior Bridge, Vitas Hospice and Nix Healthcare, Wendelyn Wilkes, Brenda Hemberger, and Norma Delk. The viewing will be held at Porter Loring Mortuary at 1101 McCullough on Easter Sunday, March 23 from 6:00 p.m. 8:00 p.m. A worship service celebrating Jeanne's life will be held at Oxford UMC at 9655 Huebner Rd on Monday, March 24 at 11:00 a.m. Fellowship, viewing and light refreshments begin at 10:00 a.m. Pastor James Galloway-Edgar of Oxford UMC will officiate. Entombment will be held at Sunset Memorial Park, 1701 Austin Hwy. immediately following worship.
