Jo Ann Ansley Goetting Woliver was born on November 23, 1932, in San Antonio, Texas, to Joe C. Ansley and Emma Leigh Ansley Crowther. Jo Ann was a happy extrovert who loved people and music from the very beginning to the very end of her days. She was a dedicated and loving daughter, wife, mother, sister, cousin, teacher and friend to her wide circle of family and friends. She was also a committed community volunteer and leader who will be missed by the many organizations and causes that she worked for during her lifetime. Growing up in San Antonio, Jo Ann graduated from Alamo Heights High School in 1949 at age 16. Four years later, she graduated from Sophie Newcomb University with a bachelor's degree in music. While at Newcomb, she was President of her sorority, Pi Beta Phi, and a member of the Tulanians, a traveling singing group, and spent many evenings tickling the ivories for her friends both in New Orleans and in San Antonio. She famously arrived home from school for Christmas one year with an evening gown over her shoulder, having gone straight from the party to the train. Thirty-five years later, Jo Ann went back to school at the University of Texas at San Antonio, receiving a Masters degree in Music Pedagogy with Honors. She combined her love of music with her love of people as a teacher of music to many, including children, adults, people with disabilities such as autism, and senior citizens. In this way she became a permanent and positive part of many peoples lives. She also dedicated much energy and time to raising money for the further development of the UTSA School of Music. When she met Lt. Fred T. Goetting, Jr. of San Antonio, a fighter pilot in the U.S. Air Force, it was love at first sight. Fred called her "Tiger Red" for her beautiful red hair. They married in 1955, lived in San Antonio, and raised their family to adulthood until Fred's death. Subsequently, she married retired Colonel Clarence Clancy Woliver, and they enjoyed many happy times together before his death in 2002. Organizations that enjoyed Jo Ann's energy and intelligence included the: Charity Ball Association, The Battle of Flowers Association, the Junior League of San Antonio, Tuesday Musical Club, Christ Episcopal Church Choir, the Vestry of Christ Episcopal Church, the Methodist Hospital Development Board, the University of Texas at San Antonio Development Board, the McDonald Observatory Board of Visitors, The Advisory Council for the School of Music at UTSA, Bible Study Fellowship, the Littlefield Society and numerous other organizations. Jo Ann was instrumental in the establishment of two significant scholarships at UTSA, the Marjorie Powell Zachry Endowed Scholarship in Music and the Bess Hieronymus Endowed Scholarship in Organ. For her service to UTSA, Jo Ann was awarded the Distinguished Alumni Award. Jo Ann also endowed the Fred T. Goetting, Jr. Endowed Presidential Scholarship in Astronomy at the University of Texas at Austin. Jo Ann will be missed greatly by her daughter Karen G. Skelton and husband Hamp, son F. Thornton Goetting III and wife KK, daughter Emma G. Calvert and husband Toby; her grandchildren James H. Skelton III, Will Skelton, John Skelton, Katie Goetting, Emily Goetting, and F. Thornton Duke Goetting IV, Lily Calvert and Rita Calvert,; her sister Teeta Ansley; her cousin Annabelle Sharp McGee and all of her extended and loving family.
