Born on September 16, 1936, Joan was preceded in death by her father, Harold C. Kraft; her mother, Katherine M. Kraft; and her beloved husband, Gene M. Davis.
She is survived by her loving daughter, Heather L. Ryan, and husband Bobby R. Ryan; her son, Sean B. Davis and wife Traci L. Davis; and her cherished granddaughters, Hailie A. Davis and Hannah M. Davis, who were the true loves of her life.
Joan graduated with honors from the Academy of Our Lady in Chicago, Illinois, and went on to earn her bachelor’s degree in education from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana. During her college years, she was an active and vibrant presence on campus. She was a proud member of Delta Gamma Sorority, a Varsity Cheerleader, Snowball Queen for the Athletic Department Winter Ball, a Student Advisor for University Student Housing, and a member of the Clipped B’s.
Joan’s life was marked by service — to her church, her community, and everyone who was fortunate enough to know her. She served as Regent for Catholic Daughters, President of the Parish Council at St. Matthew’s Parish, President of the Board of Catholic Family and Children Services and volunteered for many years as an election worker.
Professionally, Joan worked as a hostess for Braniff Airlines for three years before beginning what would become a remarkable 55-year career in 1966 with Pediatrics and Adolescents, where she remained until her retirement in 2009. Her dedication and loyalty were unmatched.
Above all, Joan will be remembered for her generous heart. There wasn’t a time in her life when she wasn’t doing something for someone else. Birthdays, anniversaries, new babies, graduations, retirements, new jobs — she was always there with a coffee cake and a warm smile. Every holiday began with her saying, “I need to get a coffee cake,” making sure breakfast was ready and there was always something special to share when loved ones gathered. Her thoughtfulness became a tradition, and her presence made every celebration brighter.
Joan loved reading and treasured her many dear friendships. But nothing brought her greater joy than her grandchildren and her family. Her kindness, faith, and unwavering generosity will continue to inspire all who knew her.
Her life was a beautiful example of giving, loving, and showing up — again and again — for the people she cared about most.
