Joan was born March 20, 1930 in Los Angeles, California. There, she met her husband of 57 years, Dr. Edward Conger Held, M.D.
Together they moved to San Antonio in the early 1950's and have resided here ever since. Joan was very devoted to community service throughout her life.
Her many contributions include serving as president of the Bexar County Medical Society Alliance; president of the Women of St. Luke's Episcopal Church, chair of the St. Luke's Wedding Guild and St. Francis Guild; the Junior League of San Antonio; founding member of the Southwest School of Art and Craft; the Military-Civilian Club; the San Antonio Symphony League and the Opera Guild.
Joan is survived by her husband, Ed; sister, Patricia M. Gibbs; brother-in-law, George A. Gibbs II; nieces, Kathryn J. Gibbs and Margaret G. Hendrickson; nephew, George A. Gibbs III, all of Seattle, WA; nephews, Blake Held of Honeoye Falls, N.Y. and Paul Held of Sumter, S.C.
