Joe graduated from Jacksonville High School. He then joined the Marines and was a Korean Veteran.
After an honorable discharge from the Marines he joined DPS Highway Patrol in Laredo and San Antonio. Following his service with the DPS he then joined Southwestern Motor Transport as Vice President until retirement.
Joe won many national awards as shooter and longtime NRA.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Lucy Watson Bateman; father, Claude Scudder Bateman; and his brother, Willard Bateman.
He is survived by two children, Edwin Bateman and his wife, Pam and their children, Laney and Ty; Kristi Bradshaw and husband, Kevin and their children, Justin and Donica; other survivors include, Mark and Staci Peak and their children, Hailey, Kayci and Randi Chavarria; Clif and Susie Smith and their daughter, Stefani; his caretaker, Betty Bateman Cox; his brothers, Billy Bateman and Francis Bateman; his sister, Margaret Lewis from Jacksonville, TX.
