'This entry comes late, but here it is: I knew this larger than life personality. He was fun and a generous man. I met him while I worked at his local HEB way back in 1995 through 2003. I also met and cared for Uncle Leon on occasion; when Joe would go on his travels to Mexico. Over those several years, we had a platonic friendship. We would go out to dine on occasion, visited the Botanical Gardens...even going to see Basia and Transiberian Orchestra in concert! Vejo Joe (so he liked to call himself), was always up for a good time enjoying life and gardening. He would call me on my mobile just to say hello and tell share his life stories. Joe even dropped in to visit me, while my now husband/then boyfriend, were packing to move out into a bigger apartment. I used to be his neighbor as well; living just across the street from the HEB where we met. He was also a big flirt; he didn't mean any harm by it, he just loved women...and people for that matter. I like his company because he was always jovial, except when getting after his dog, Jared, for getting out of the yard. I often had wondered why the phone calls stopped. So, a couple of years ago, I reluctantly went on-line to find, that he did indeed pass away. I'm only sorry that I didn't make time for him during his later invitations to go out and have a bite to eat and to catch up. I dearly miss "Vejo Joe". May you keep partying up there in the sweet bye and bye. Save a seat for me, would ya?

'Joe regularly attended the Mahncke Park Neighborhood meetings at Lion's Field Center on Broadway and we regularly sat together & shared laughs. Each fall for the past 20+ years, neighbors have gathered to spread native wildflower seeds in Mahncke Park in memory of area residents that have passed. I will remember Joe as we spread seeds in the park later this year, as well as every spring when the flowers bloom.'

'I run the plant sales program at the San Antonio Botanical Garden and I knew Joe through his visits to the Sales Greenhouse at the Garden. He had been a more active volunteer before I got there, having to slow it down a bit for his health. He was always full of life, full of stories, and full of sly wit. 'My sweet brother Joe was one I admired so very much, he was my only brother. He was blessed with natural talents of fixing things, building things or designing things that is why he was a natural in Engineering and very good at it. My brother was the friendliest person that knew no stranger. His personality was inviting to all. May he be at Peace in Heaven knowing that we will all meet again in Heaven to be at Peace together. He left behind five adult children and grand children - all that he was very very close too and proud of. I loved that he had his pictures and stories to share with all of us when he would visit.
