John E. Adkins, III went to be with the Lord on April 10, 2009 after a courageous fight against numerous health problems. He was born at Fort Sam Houston on January 9, 1928 and spent his life serving his country and his fellow man. Joining the Navy at 17 at the end of World War II, he spent 24 years in the military, retiring from the Air Force in 1971 and worked another 20 years at Randolph AFB. He was active with the St. Vincent DePaul Society and Alcoholics Anonymous and was extremely proud of his 33 years of sobriety. He was a living example for many people. Predeceased by his father John E. Adkins, Jr., mother Louise Greco, and sister Ann Durr. He is survived by the love of his life Beverly, his son John E. IV, two grandsons, Ryan, John V and wife Cassandra, two great-grandchildren, Joshua and Emily, sister Mary Louise Byrd and husband Leon, brothers Tom, John, and Michael and sisters, Leilani and Molly, beloved inlaws, Kathleen O'Hara, Tom Collings, David and Judy Collings, and Nancy Hemmingsen
