He grew up in San Antonio and attended Alamo Heights High School where he was President of the High Steppers.
He graduated from Texas Military Institute after Trudy decided he needed a little more discipline and put him in a uniform. He was also an Eagle Scout and was so proud that his grandson is in the process of attaining that honor.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Phyllis Barnes Rosberg and her husband Bob, and numerous hunting dogs including Kate and Geronimo, who are still holding a point for him somewhere on God's great hunting grounds.
He served at the end of World War II in Italy where he was known for his resourcefulness for getting just about anything for anybody!
He returned home and graduated from Trinity University.
He went into the Insurance business with his father's old friend Barney Matteson and later joined and became a partner in the firm of Eichlitz, Dennis and Wray. They have now merged with John L. Wortham Insurance of Houston.
He was a past President of The Order of the Alamo, past President of The German Club, member of The Argyle Club and The San Antonio Country Club.
Known as a serial prankster, his antics and playful tricks are legend to this day. Burton, aka Burtie, Banjo Eyes, Uncle Bud, and Poppy loved hunting, fishing, beautiful women, Fourth of July fireworks in Rockport, cooking T-Bone steaks for his family, cigars, hair cut at his house, fun times, good drinks and fine brandy.
Burton loved everything.....wait a minute, he didn't like cats.
He played golf until he lost his golf clubs.
He turned to tennis where he played from the courts of the San Antonio Country Club to the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club where his famous, dazzling drop shot won many matches to the gnashing of teeth by much better players. He loved watching all sports on TV.
He was part owner of the San Antonio Spurs with whom he enjoyed many hunting trips in Pearsall.
Rest in peace, dear Poppy.
He is survived by his son John Burton Barnes III and wife Margaret, grandchildren John Burton Barnes IV, Bracken West Barnes, his former wife, Libba Barnes, and nieces Carol Doody and Janet Emack. He is also survived by his long time loving housekeeper, Janie Martinez.
