

Jon Timothy Ussery, 65, of Post, Texas, passed away peacefully on October 12, 2024, after a courageous battle with Leukemia. Born on January 14, 1959, Jon was a devoted husband and father, an avid outdoorsman, hunter, and a passionate Texas Tech football fan. Jon grew up in the small town of Post, Texas with his parents and 6 siblings. He graduated from Odessa Permian High School, then enrolled at Odessa Community College and started dating his soulmate Peggy on a college ski trip. A year later he transferred to Texas Tech University. His sharp mind led him to science, and he became a Geophysics major. While at Tech they got married and bought their first home in Lubbock, Texas (home of the Red Raiders). He started his career working for Hugo Reed full time while going to school and graduated from TTU in 1986. After college Jon took flying lessons, earning his private pilot’s license, and bought his own plane (a Cessna 150). Jon spent most of his career working directly for the U.S. Air Force as a contractor, starting at Reece AFB in Lubbock, then at Peterson AFB in Colorado Springs, then at Booz Allen Hamilton, and finally at Lackland AFB in San Antonio where he became a Licensed Professional Geoscientist. He retired from Lackland AFB as Branch Chief of Environmental Restoration Enterprise Management.
Jon’s love for the great outdoors was evident in everything he did. He found joy in hiking, fly fishing, camping, and hunting, often sharing these experiences with family and friends. A skilled marksman, Jon enjoyed competition shooting, winning many awards and medals at NRA and CMP local matches, State tournaments and National competitions. He shared his love of shooting and hunting with his two daughters, Catlyn and Keely. In addition to his outdoor adventures, Jon was a dedicated runner, completing numerous half marathons throughout his life. His spirit of perseverance and determination was an inspiration to many. He had a deep love for Texas Tech football, closely following the Red Raiders and always celebrating the thrill of the game. He often remarked, "Nothing beats the West Texas sunset", a sentiment that perfectly encapsulated his appreciation for the beauty of his home state.
Jon was a dedicated husband, who worked hard to provide for his family. He was a loving father to his daughters, who brought laughter and joy into his life. Creating memories like; flying his plane with his wife, camping in Colorado, hiking Lone Cone Mountain, sightseeing in Ireland, and countless more. He was a lover of cats, finding companionship in his first cat, Sarge, and adopting numerous others throughout the years.
Jon was preceded in death by his parents, Dorothy Jean and Silas Ussery; and sisters, Lou and Ann Ussery. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Peggy Sue Ussery; daughters, Catlyn Ussery, Keely Ussery and fiancé Carson Fairall; siblings, Sue Spieker, Jake Ussery, Liz Beall, and Michelle Gandy; aunt and uncle, Buddy and Kay Ussery as well as numerous extended family members and a lifetime of friends. Jon’s warmth, humor, and adventurous spirit will be deeply missed by all who knew him. His memory will be carried on in the hearts of all his friends and family.
