Joseph Wayne Brophy, age 72, passed away on Thursday, October 19, 2023 in San Antonio, Texas. He was born December 4th, 1950 to Ann and Donald Brophy in Dixon, Illinois. He received his Masters degree in metallurgy at Iowa State University, and was recruited straight from college by Babcock & Wilcox in Lynchburg, Virginia. He spent many years working in their non-destructive nuclear division, traveling worldwide on extensive projects. He left B&W for Sigma Research in Seattle, Washington as part of their guided wave research team. Colleagues from B&W convinced him to move to San Antonio to work for Southwest Research, where he remained until creating B&E LTD with ties to SW and Chevron. Joseph was an avid hunter and sportsman. He was a standout basketball player for ISU and company leagues. He loved making the impossible look easy and rose to AA Master in Sporting Clay shoots across Texas. He was a familiar figure at the Nationals and Joshua Creek, his 6' 8" frame and constant smile making him easy to pick out. Two of his great joys were introducing shooting to new enthusiasts and sharing skills with seasoned veterans. He was also a wizard with cards, and well-nigh invincible at chess. He was preceded in death by both parents, several aunts and uncles, and his sister-in-law Lori. Joseph is survived by numerous cousins, and his younger brother James.
The family will receive friends from 10:00 am to 11:00 am on Tuesday, October 31, 2023, at Porter Loring Mortuary West.
