Born in Aleppo, Syria, Joseph was the second eldest of six children and the eldest son of Jamil and Mazal Tawil. A proud son of Aleppo, he carried his heritage with dignity and pride throughout his life. Joseph was a successful businessman in Laredo, where he opened his first toy and children’s wear store in 1966. His entrepreneurial spirit carried him through more than 30 successful years in business.
It was in Mexico City that Joseph met the love of his life, Ruth. They shared a devoted marriage until her passing in May 2016. Together, they raised two children, Marilyn and Jimmy, and shared their home with many friends. Whether traveling to Houston for holidays or spending time in San Antonio, Joseph was a constant, loving presence in the lives of his eight grandchildren who affectionately called him “Gido Joe.” He was their biggest fan and loving grandfather.
Joseph was a deeply learned and cultured man. He spoke five languages fluently and had conversational command of several more. Educated at a Yeshiva, he was highly proficient in the teachings of the Talmud and Torah. His connection to Israel ran deep; he was a proud Zionist and deeply knowledgeable about Middle Eastern history and culture. His intellect, wisdom, and insight left a lasting impression on all who knew him.
He was active in his hometown shul and led Shabbat services at Agudas Achim in Laredo Texas. Doing so with the reverence, fluency, and presence of a seasoned rabbi — though he never formally took the title. When asked how he had acquired such rabbinical depth of knowledge, Joseph would proudly speak of his long lineage of Chief Rabbis from Aleppo. In fact, he had once been selected to become a rabbi himself, but ultimately chose to pursue a new life in America.
Joseph Tawil was revered by family, friends, and community members alike. He leaves behind a legacy of love, wisdom, and unwavering devotion to faith, family, and tradition.
The love Gido Joe gave us will never fade, and his memory will forever be a blessing. We love you!
