No truer love than what Joy and Tim had. They met when she was 16, a student at Robert E. Lee HS on the day Tim graduated from Edison HS. Joy and Tim were life partners and an example of what true love was, they were together for 55 years and married for over 50 years.
In June 1969, Joy became a hostess for Texas International Airlines. A year later Joy married Timothy A. Cox on June 12, 1970 at Concordia Lutheran Church in San Antonio, Texas. She joined her husband at the University of Texas, Austin for his final semester in college. In 1971 Tim joined the USAF. Following his graduation as a 2LT they were stationed at Williams AFB for pilot training. Tim credits Joy for her support throughout the years at their various assignments. Tim was selected in 1982 for special duty assignment at Beale, AFB, California as a U-2 reconnaissance pilot. While there, Joy became a successful Realtor. They were stationed there for 8 years. Tim and Joy retired after 20 years in the Air Force and moved back to San Antonio.
Joy was a totally dedicated military spouse raising 2 sons while Tim was frequently gone on long assignments overseas. She stayed busy with her many hobbies such as coaching soccer for her sons, cake decorating, stained glass projects, gardening, playing softball and cooking. She loved country western music and her niece said her eyes would light up when dancing with Tim. She took after her mother a florist. Having a green thumb, she raised many plants and flowers. At least 50 plants came into the house every time it would freeze. She loved flea markets and antique stores. Every Spring she and her 5 girlfriends went junking in Round Top, Texas. She was an amazing cook and dearly loved fixing new recipes for her family. Her idea of casual reading was a cookbook. She had over 100 cookbooks. Christmas was her favorite time, and her home would be filled with decorations. Hosting 15-20 family members and friends was common.
During their marriage Joy and Tim shared many fun-filled cruises to Alaska, Canada, and Europe. Joy’s favorite was their Mediterranean Cruise. They had planned another one for their 50th Anniversary, but the pandemic put a halt to that one.
They and their sons are charter members at Abiding Presence Lutheran Church.
Joy had a beaming smile, was kind, generous, selfless, and loving. She was a wonderful daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, sister, and friend to those blessed and fortunate enough to be part of her life. As her cousin Kathy said, “She lived up to her name, Joy!”
She was preceded in death by her parents, Wilton and Melba (Koenig) Schultz. Joy is survived by her husband of 51 years, Lt. Col. Timothy A. Cox, USAF (Ret.); sons, Jeremy R. Cox and wife Kelly and Bryan M. Cox and wife Kathy; sister, Darlene Y. Cox and husband Harvey; grandchildren, Rylie, Nathan, Sydney, Evelyn, Preston, Landon, Cullen, and Savannah; and one great-grandchild on the way.
The family will receive friends from 5 P.M. to 7 P.M. on April 28, 2021 at Porter Loring Mortuary North
