On many occasions, John would recall how the Oak Grove kids would wreak havoc throughout the neighborhood. As a resident of North Bryan, he attended Bowie Elementary where he went on to graduate from Stephen F. Austin High School. During his two and one-half years at 29 Palms, California, he made Sgt., while receiving the National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal and completed the Marine Corp Institute Accounting for Operating Budgets training. John loved his country and time of service. The United States Marine Corp would instill discipline, perseverance, honor, dignity, humility, duty, and loyalty. Character traits that would carry him into his 36 years of service to Verizon, formerly GTE. John made many friends and acquaintances during his career. He played a significant role in ushering in the evolution of wireless phones from LAN lines. He would come home saying technology wanted to replace our rotary phones with a device we could take with us on our person.
John was an excellent wood craftsman. Even today his family still enjoys the furniture he created. He and his son Juan III enjoyed creating pinewood derby cars for scouts. After applying graphite those two cars would run at max speed! He designed a wood cross for his daughter Vanessa's catechism class. At the request of Pastor Pat, John's cross design was placed on the end of each pew at the St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in College Station, Texas. His grandchildren Joaquin and Eva, still use a little blue table and chair that John created for his children, 45 years ago. When he and wife Mary moved to San Antonio, John created a rock patio in their backyard, using the stones he found in the greenbelt area near their apartment and his diverse collection of tools.
His dedicated passion to his career, building, and creating was all for the love of his family. He found the most joy in being with his family and grandchildren. He enjoyed fishing and playing catch with his grandson; and painting and drawing with his granddaughter. He loved playing with his grand pups too.
In the Spring of 2022, God brought John to an earthly paradise in Boerne, Texas; the best Texas has to offer. Little did we know his time would be so short before going from glory to glory, walking on streets of gold.
He is loved deeply and will be missed by his family.
