

Juan R. Zavala, 71, of San Antonio, Texas, was called to heaven from the comfort of his own home surrounded and supported by his loving family on March 31, 2020. Juan is survived by his wife Yolanda Cisneros Zavala of 49 years of marriage. He was a loving father to four children, son John Christopher Zavala, Jr. (Anna), daughters Lorraine Zavala Frey (Brendan), Annette Zavala Idar (Michael), and Elaine Marie Zavala. Juan was a beloved brother to his sister Evangelina Zamarripa and his brothers Delfino Zavala, Jr., and Ricardo Zavala. He was adored by his 9 grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and extended family. Juan worked hard all his life and was a devoted father, husband, and grandfather.
Juan retired from the military after 34 years of service as a Chief Warrant Officer IV in the U.S. Army. He served two combat tours overseas in support of Desert Storm in 1990, and Operation Enduring Freedom in 2003. A few highlights of his achievements and awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, the Army Achievement Medal, the Air Force Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Medal, the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal and the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal. He graduated from Southwest Texas University (Texas State University) and also retired civil service working at Lackland Air Force Base.
Juan loved traveling the world visiting many countries and various states with his wife and family. He was also an avid sports fan who was a season ticket holder for his beloved San Antonio Spurs. He took any opportunity to see the Texas Rangers, Houston Astros and Dallas Cowboys games. He loved the thrill and excitement of winning at casinos. As a passionate outdoors-man, Juan spent countless hours enjoying fishing at the gulf coast.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, in accordance with CDC safety precautions, services for Juan Zavala will be attended by immediate family and his siblings only. However, services were live-streamed on April 6, 2020 at 2:00 p.m. You may view the recording here:
He will be laid to rest at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.
