

Julia Mauermann Hays Kenney Carlson, age 100, passed away on April 26th, 2023, in San Antonio, Texas. She was born August 14, 1922, to Julia Wagner Mauermann and Gus B. Mauermann, former Mayor of San Antonio. She was a descendant of a pioneer Texas family. Her great, great grandfather was Asa Mitchell, one of Stephen F. Austin’s “Old 300” colonists, who fought at the Battle of San Jacinto.
She married her first husband, Lt. Col. Ned Sprunt Hays, in 1941 with whom she had three children. After his passing in 2005, she married her childhood friend, Nat Mitchell Kenney, who sadly passed away six months later. Julia later married Leslie Raymond Carlson who passed away in 2017.
Julia attended Sullins College in Bristol, Virginia, the University of Texas, and Incarnate Word University. Having lived on the Asa Mitchell ranch, Julia aspired to be a rancher and follow in her ancestors’ footsteps. However, The Asa Mitchell school was in need of a teacher. Julia taught 30 children in a one room schoolhouse. She was a teacher, a realtor, an artist, and an avid bridge player. She was a member of several bridge clubs. As an Ambassador for the American Bridge Club, she traveled abroad playing in bridge tournaments. She was a past President of the Military Civilian Club, a long-time member of First Presbyterian and volunteered in her church at the Army Residence Community. Julia volunteered at the Institute of Texas Cultures, McNay Art Museum, and the Witte Museum. Julia was a member of the CRT, Children of the Republic of Texas, several dance clubs, and the Olmos Park Garden Club.
Julie is preceded in death by three sisters, Lenora Norton, Margaret Jackson, and Grace Allen, her first husband Ned Hays and husbands Nat Kenney and Les Carlson. She is survived by her three children, daughter Helen Hays Pohly, son David Mauermann Hays and his wife Charlotte Latimer Hays, and her son James Edward Hays and his wife Janet Peacock Hays, grandson Michael Olive and wife Jennie, grandson Phillip Olive and wife Michelle, grandson Ched Hays and wife Amy, granddaughter Jill Hays and husband Cody Russell, grandson Mitchell Hays and wife Mariana and granddaughter Robyn Hays, ten great grandchildren, her sister Mildred and husband Stanley Morton, extended family and many friends.
A graveside service will be held at Sunset Memorial Park, on Friday, May 19th, at 11:00AM.
