After graduating from Jefferson High School, Julie took acting classes at SAC. She was the store manager for Amanda's Fine Gifts until 1997. She resumed work in 2005 with NEISD, the past six years being at Lee High School as Administrative Assistant to the Director of the STEM Academy.
Julie could make people laugh. She orchestrated elaborate pranks. Julie was a founding member of the comedy-improv troupe, the Oxy-Morons, who performed for over twenty-three years. For many years the Oxy's performed every Friday night. Julie's most recent performance was in February, in the Oxy's annual benefit show for the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards.
Julie loved her monthly Bunco group. One of her favorite pastimes was watching her DVR-recorded reality shows. She loved the beach, and instituted the family's annual vacation to South Padre Island, starting in 1994. She loved visiting her son, Dallas, in Rome, two summers ago. She had always wanted to see Italy, and her dream was fulfilled.
Julie was a loyal friend, and a devoted wife and mother. She was a fearless protector of those who needed protecting. She loved, and cared deeply about, elephants. She so loved her dogs, past and living: Peaches, Pepper, Sugar, Gizmo, and Sophie.
She was preceded in death by her father. Julie is survived by her husband, Jeff Akins; sons, Dallas and Dillon Akins; mother, Kay Shaw; brother, Burton G. Shaw, M.D. and wife, Gloria; as well as numerous nephews, nieces, cousins, and close friends.
Honorary pallbearers will be Dallas Akins, Dillon Akins, Kyle Peterson, Scotty Stromboe, Burton G. Shaw III, and Tyler Shaw.
The family will receive friends on Friday, July 14, 2017 from 5:00 pm - 8:00 pm at Porter Loring on McCullough with a Rosary at 7:30 pm.
