Our beloved Julie Marie Skiles left us on earth on March 20th, 2022, to be with our departed loved ones and our Lord. She was home surrounded by family in San Antonio, Texas. Julie was born in Houston, Texas, on March 8th, 1966. The family moved to Del Rio in May, 1971. Julie attended Garfield Elementary School, Del Rio Jr. High, where she was part of the pep squad team at both campuses, then attended and graduated from Del Rio High School in 1984. She was a member of the Queen City Belles.
As a young girl, Julie was active in the Girls in Action and Acteen programs at the First Baptist Church. Here, she enjoyed Vacation Bible School and summer camps at Alto Frio. She served as a counselor there the summer after high school. Julie showed lambs in 4-H – mostly to satisfy her social needs as well as her love for the outdoors. She made many friends in Jr. High and High School and many are here today. What a glorious testimony to her life and the friendships she valued.
Julie learned to hunt, fish, swim, ski, play Canasta, Pitch, Moon and 42 dominoes. Her Grandma Skiles taught her to crochet; she continued to crochet many beautiful and creative things throughout her life. As an adult, Julie enjoyed decorating, wedding/party/event planning and consulting, making floral arrangements, (all kinds of flowers), karaoke singing, and making “fashion statements”, whether it be dressing as an Easter Bunny for a parade or Easter party or a scary character for her annual Halloween haunted house in Utopia and Sabinal in her successful floral/gift shops. Proceeds from haunted house was donated to various charities. Julie loved spending time at Lake Amistad and hiking around Langtry and on various ranches. She never spent much time sitting; she loved to travel and was an active member of the Sabinal Chamber of Commerce and participated annually in Sabinal’s hog festival. She volunteered with many organizations in which her boys were involved.
She was a lifelong learner. She held an Associate’s Degree in Interior Design, had her Texas Realtors License and Insurance Sales license and studied home and landscape designs as well as health and self-improvement books.
As almost all of you know, Julie loved to sing. She did it day and night, with or without a microphone. She had a can-do, positive attitude. She loved to entertain and cook and did it for family and friends often. If Julie were here today, she would want us all to celebrate her life and would encourage each of us to love and give to each other, as life is too short to sweat the small stuff. She would close her conversations by saying, “I’ve gotta go get the ball rollin, TTYL.” She is undoubtedly getting the ball rolling right now in her eternal home.
Julie is survived by her mother, Mary Ahrens, sons, Jared, Mitchell and Jacob Hutto; brothers, Phillip Ahrens and Reagan Ahrens; sisters, Daina (Mike) Slover, Missy (Doug) Christensen; a niece, several nephews, aunts and cousins.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to your favorite childrens charity or a school of art/education in memory of Julie Skiles, as she loved children and was so creative
