Born on June 7, 1937, in Iowa Park, Texas, to parents Gladys Horn James and Dewey Oscho James, June grew up with a love for learning and family. After graduating from W.F. George High School in Iowa Park, she earned her Bachelor of Science in Homemaking and English and later a Master’s degree in English from Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, Texas.
In 1958, June married the love of her life, Donnie McManus. While living in Wichita Falls, they welcomed the arrival of their two sons, Mitchell and Brent. Together, they moved their family to San Antonio in 1967 as Donnie pursued his law degree at St. Mary’s University. While June had many passions in life, motherhood and family brought her the most joy. She loved her family beyond measure and delighted in spending time with and serving those she loved.
A devoted educator, June began her illustrious 31-year career teaching in the English Department at San Antonio College. Her dedication to academic excellence, compassion for her students, and connection to her colleagues are representative of the way she committed fully to all of her endeavors. Upon her retirement, June was honored with the prestigious title of Professor Emeritus by the Alamo Community College District. During her time at San Antonio College, June developed lifelong friendships with a few of her colleagues, and 50 years later, “The Js” are still some of her most cherished of friends.
June’s vibrant presence extended beyond the classroom. She was deeply involved in numerous organizations and clubs, including the Beta Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, the Opera Guild, the San Antonio Bar Auxiliary, the Texas Lawyers Auxiliary, the Harvard Book Club, and the Tuesday Musical Club. Her faith was central to her life, and she was a devoted member of Laurel Heights United Methodist Church.
June’s hobbies reflected her warmth and creativity. She loved traveling, reading, quilting, music, playing bridge, gardening, cooking, and most of all, spending time with her cherished grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She filled her days by combining these hobbies in any way that she could - walking to the symphony with neighbors, taking her grandchildren to the “enchilada” library, making precious quilts for each great-grandchild, and making homemade peach ice cream for her family on any special occasion.
June was preceded in death by her parents, Gladys and D. O. James; her husband, Donnie McManus; and her siblings, Billy James, Don James, and Juanelle King. She is survived by her sons, Mitchell McManus (Shelly) and Brent McManus (Kelly); her grandchildren, Zachary McManus (Kelsey), Tyler McManus (Elisabeth), Katie McManus Bennert (Chris), Kelsey McManus, and Jordan McManus Sandoval (Caton); and her great-grandchildren, Cooper, Eleanor, Landon, Logan, Brooks, and Annie. She is also survived by her brothers, Deryl James (Pamela) and Douglas James (Melba), and numerous nieces and nephews.
June’s life was a testament to love, service, and the power of education. Her legacy lives on in the many lives she touched through her kindness, wisdom, and grace. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
A Memorial Service will take place on Thursday, March 20, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. at Laurel Heights United Methodist Church, 227 W Woodlawn Ave, San Antonion, TX 78212.
