It is a commandment with a promise; “Just as we are to honor the ONE who created us. Honor your father and mother, that it may go well with you, that you may live a long life on the earth.” Ephesians 6:2-3. Jurene was 99 years, 117 days of age when our Lord called her home.
H. Douglas Steadman and Jurene Nicholson met in Kindergarten at Oaklawn Elementary. They married in the summer of 1946, after Doug was released from the Navy. Jurene and Doug were married 71 years – a courtship of love that lasted a lifetime.
Jurene earned a business degree at Texas Christian University, quite a feat for a woman in 1945. She moved to San Antonio, Texas in 1948 and gave birth to five children. Jurene was an active mother and wife: raising 5 kids, volunteering at school, church and nonprofits. She enjoyed gardening to feed her family and later gardening for pleasure. Growing roses, orchids, poppies, larkspur, wildflowers, and everything green. Jurene’s gardens were beautiful. Jurene lived in the same house in Castle Hills, Texas for 68 years. Jurene was a dedicated wife, hardworking and loving mother, and faithful servant of God.
She will be laid to rest with her husband at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery in a private ceremony.
