Katherine Hopkins served as the eyes and ears of Lackland Terrace, one of only a few who worked relentlessly for the betterment of our neighborhood. Not satisfied with merely reporting needed improvements and repairs as well as potential problems, Katherine was quick to take action and if necessary - repeatedly if needed - to keep or make our community safe and well-maintained. She would quickly notify Public Works of substandard road conditions and potholes, CPS of utility light outages, Animal Care Services of stray animals, our San Antonio Fear Free Environment (SAFFE) officer from SAPD of suspicious criminal activity, and Code Enforcement officers of violations that compromised safety and/or jeopardized property values if not corrected.
She would also routinely alert City Council District 4 Councilman (CM) Rey Saldaa and his staff of pressing issues, including the proliferation of illegal bandit signs, many of which she personally removed and submitted to their field office. Furthermore, she apprised them of vandalized City property within the district in need of repair. In fact, her input in one instance led to the District 4 CM and staff arranging for the replacement of a badly damaged park bench at the Lackland Terrace Park along with the installation of a third, much-needed park bench to provide rest for less able-bodied citizens trying to stay or get physically fit.
Additionally, Katherine was a long-time member of Lackland Terrace Neighborhood Association (LTNA) and was pivotal in making not only Lackland Terrace, but San Antonio, what it is today. Within this organization, Katherine served for many years as Vice President for Lackland Terrace's Area 2 and block captain not only for her street but also for two others. In this capacity, she particularly monitored activities and conditions in this area to ensure it was well maintained and safe plus she ensured timely delivery of monthly newsletters and other information of great importance to area residents. As only one of two phone callers for LTNA, she routinely contacted members without email to quickly notify them of urgent news of a critical nature including public meetings for construction projects, proposals, and rezoning hearings.
Katherine was also a staunch supporter of this organization's participation in Texas District 124 Representative Jos Menendez's annual food drive which greatly aided the San Antonio Food Bank's mission of fighting hunger. And, even though LTNA did not host their own annual National Night Out event - an endeavor that unifies citizens and SAPD in the fight against crime - she volunteered for many years at another District 4 neighborhood organization to ensure the success of this worthwhile initiative. Whenever the call came, Katherine did not hesitate to provide crucial input for the City's annual budgets, periodic bond proposal commissions, future mobility plans of what was then known as the Metropolitan Planning Organization, the South/Southwest Sector neighborhood master plan, and Lackland Terrace Neighborhood Organization's revision of its by-laws, the first revision in over 10 years.
She is survived by her daughter, Katherine Cummings; grand-daughter, Pamela Roche, and three great-grandsons. Katherine Hopkins was truly a treasure to Lackland Terrace, its neighborhood organization, the City of San Antonio, and to all who knew her. She will be dearly missed.
