Kathleen "Kathy" (O'Connell) Green

Kathy grew up with her parents and her sister, Mary O’Connell (now Roberts), as well as 15 1st cousins, who she became a mentor for as she was dubbed the “Queen of the Cousins”. Throughout her life she was extremely protective of her sister Mary, as she was her big sister, but in many ways also her mother as she helped raise her. She was heavily devoted to Girl Scouts, Girl State, and later in life the Bentwater Wives Club. She graduated from Opelika High School in 1964 as an Honor Student making all “A’s” throughout school. Later, in 1967 she graduated from Auburn University as an Honor Grad.

Along the way she met the love of her life in the 6th grade when Kerry Edward Green and her first met. They began dating in the 10th grade, and the rest was history as it turned into an epic love story for the ages. Once they both graduated from Auburn University, after her brief stint as a High School teacher, they began living the military life and Kathy became the true embodiment of an Officer’s Wife. In 1970 she was blessed with her first-born son, Jon Green (wife, Liz), and later in 1972 Ryan Green (wife, Lupe) and in 1976, James Green joined the family, making her the mother of 3 boys. She was tough through the entire process of raising all three of them, and they later became the mega protectors of her she had been her whole life for others.

When she was able to find time for herself, she loved gardening, antiquing, cross-stitching, playing bridge, and bowling with her friends, as well as the occasional trip to the casino for some slot machine action. However, nothing ever came between her and her grandchildren. Travis and Kaitlyn Green (mother, Heidi), Kyle, Matthew, Luke, and Erin Green, and Jacob Samaniego are the names of the 7 grandchildren in her life. She did all she could to be at every baseball game, softball game, performances between band, dance, and color guard, and all of the important moments in her grandchildren’s lives. She loved them relentlessly, and they loved her.

Kathy never met a person she couldn’t start a conversation with and never faltered from holding herself to the highest of standards as a human, a wife, a mother, a grandmother, a sister and a friend. She loved the world and now will love it as an angel in our hearts and from above.

A viewing will take place on Saturday, March 21 at 12:00 p.m., followed by a Funeral Service at 1:00 p.m., at Porter Loring Mortuary, 1101 McCullough Ave., San Antonio, TX 78212. If you need to contact the mortuary ahead of time, their number is (210) 227-8221.

Interment will take place at 9:30 am on Wednesday, March 25, 2026, at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery (1520 Harry Wurzbach Road, San Antonio, Texas 78209).
