Kelby David Brown, Sr., age 82, passed away on Saturday, February 8, 2025 in San Antonio, Texas. Born on March 17, 1942 in Kerrville, Texas, to his parents, Lydia (Whitewood) Brown and Werdna Burton Brown II, Kelby was a beloved husband, father, uncle, cousin, and friend.
Kelby graduated from Sul Ross University in 1965 with a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education. Kelby had a successful 35-year career as a coach. Kelby had a deep love for the outdoors, and his passions for hunting, fishing, and golf were integral to his identity. Kelby’s influence extended beyond the sports community, touching the lives of all who had the honor of knowing him. His warm personality and genuine care for others left an indelible mark on everyone he encountered. He will be deeply missed by all, especially his family, friends, former athletes, and teammates.
Kelby was predeceased by his parents, Lydia (Whitewood) Brown and Werdna Burton Brown II, and his brothers, Spencer Whitewood Brown, and Werdna Burton Brown III (Pinky). He is survived by his son, Kelby D. Brown Jr., and his loving wife of 52 years, Helen Tamara (Melnyk) Brown, and a close-knit circle of friends who will carry his memory forward. The family will receive friends from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., Friday, February 28, 2025, at Porter Loring Mortuary North.
