Kenneth Charles Jones

Kenneth Charles Jones passed away on December 27, 2023 in San Antonio, Texas. Ken was born in Davenport, Iowa, and attended the University of Iowa in Iowa City, earning his Bachelor of Arts degree in Mathematical Sciences in 1973. Ken was drafted into the Army during the Vietnam War and served in cryptographic repair in Thailand and Germany as an E5. Ken lived in San Antonio with his wife of 29 years, Ruth Charlotte Jones, and loved to visit his children and grandchildren in both Iowa and California.

His career in the education industry spanned 43 years as a mainframe computer programmer in testing and scoring, with him ultimately designing, developing, and perfecting the scoring system called Scorflow. He always solved problems in a unique way that earned respect among his colleagues, and many considered him a mentor.

In retirement, Ken and Ruth frequently traveled domestically and internationally, and they participated together in weekly billiard/pool leagues in San Antonio. Ken’s discipline and dedication at the pool table resulted in exceptional skill and sportsmanship and allowed him to compete in many high-level pool tournaments in Las Vegas, Nevada, and to become a finalist in the US Amateur Championship in 2011.

Ken is preceded in death by his father, Charles Raymond Jones; mother, Inez Hildred Jones (née Peterson); and brother, Jon Edward Jones. He is survived by his wife Ruth, and his children Shannon Ellis, Brian Jones, and Jennifer Brinkmeyer, in addition to his seven grandchildren.

Friends and family will gather from 3-5 pm that afternoon at Timberwood Park Clubhouse gate code 54935# to remember and celebrate Ken's life. All are welcome to come and share your memories and stories of our time with Ken. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting memorial contributions made to one of the organizations below whose work touched Ken's heart over the years.
