"Go rest high upon the mountain, for your earthly work is done". Kenneth D. Young answered God's call and went to his heavenly repose on Friday, November 29, 2002. He has fought valiantly against numerous debilitating illnesses over the last three years, but the last bout of illness was too much for his tired body to overcome. Mr. Young has touched the lives of four generations of young people during a career as a Texas Public School educator that spanned thirty-eight years. He served as a teacher; a coach; a principal of elementary, middle, and high schools; athletic director; director of secondary curriculum; and assistant superintendent. Of the school districts that he served, Mr. Young always expressed a particular fondness for the years he spent at South San Antonio where he held the teachers, students, staff, and parents in high regard. There are numerous graduates who played on teams that he coached and who will fondly recall that Coach Young's trade-mark was that ever-present baseball cap that was always "cocked at that weird off-center angle". After spending the last seventeen years of his career in Del Rio, he and his wife, Imogene returned to San Antonio where they have continued to reside. God smiled on them for ten years after their 1986 retirement, and they traveled throughout the U.S. and Canada. Of particular note was the seven-week trip to Alaska where Mr. Young was able to retrace the construction route for the ALCAN Highway, which he worked on as a young man. He is the only son of Barney and Mamie Massey Young and was born on February 9, 1921, in Bonham, Texas. He always felt great pride regarding his parents because they were both teachers with Master's degrees. His father was one of the youngest fully degreed superintendents in Texas. Sadly, his father died at the early age of thirty-four, leaving Kenneth to fulfill the promise to go on to college and earn a degree. Kenneth was working full time and attending classes at the University of North Texas when he met and married Imogene Moss. They lived in Lewisville, Carrollton, and Corsicana before moving to San Antonio in 1949. Kenneth worked outside the teaching profession for several years. In addition to road construction in Canada and Alaska, he was a construction superintendent for the Texas Highway Department. He was also a salesman for R.J. Reynolds and was repeatedly honored as top salesman in the eastern region of Texas. He is preceded in death by his infant son, Kenneth D. Young, Jr.; his father, Barney Young; and his mother, Mamie Young Bishop. Survivors include his beloved wife of sixty-one years, Imogene; daughter, Sandra Gayle Young; and family members, Doris Gober, George and Sue Gober and family of Lewisville; Lola Lapington and family of Grand Saline; Dorothy Rhoads and Gene and Olene Gray and family of Wylie; numerous other cousins; nieces and nephews. Also included as survivors are the following devoted friends: Mrs. Bertha Stovall, loving caregiver; Charles and Katherine Feuerbacher and Robert and Charlotte Walters. Go rest in peace, Daddy, because we expect you to light the way for us when our time comes.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Heartland Hospice of San Antonio, Salvation Army and Texas Parks and Wildlife.
