Born on a citrus orchard outside of Donna, Texas on November 19, 1947, from an early age Kirk displayed a quick wit and keen intellect which served him well throughout life. After the freeze of 1949 wiped out the citrus orchard, the young Menczer family moved away from the Rio Grande Valley and settled in Corpus Christi, where Kirk excelled academically – graduating from St Patrick Catholic Grade school in 1962 and as valedictorian of the class of 1966 at Corpus Christi Academy.
From there he went on to study accounting at St. Mary’s University in San Antonio, graduating Magna Cum Laude in 1970. It was here that he met a young vivacious coed named Monika Jean Lewis. In many ways, they were the essence of “opposites attract"– Monika: creative, outgoing, and larger than life; Kirk: witty, affable, and reserved. But they quickly recognized their soul’s complement in the other, and they married days after graduation on May 30, 1970. For the following 54 years they never left each other’s side. There was nothing in life he cherished more than his love Monika.
Kirk possessed a powerful business acumen which manifested in the impressive arc of his professional endeavors. After an initial stretch at public accounting firm Peat Marwick LLP, Kirk joined global jet turbine company, Chromalloy, where he rapidly climbed the corporate ladder, ultimately serving as Chief Financial Officer for European Operations. In this capacity he and Monika crisscrossed the globe, culminating in numerous years as expatriates in the Netherlands.
After leaving Chromalloy and returning home to San Antonio, Kirk found his true calling as an entrepreneur. He was a businessman through and through, and once he embraced the freedom to follow his own path his ability and ingenuity guided him into a myriad of disparate ventures: from his CPA practice to real estate investing and finance; to coins and collectables. His endeavors were broad, and his successes far outnumbered his failures.
In addition to his many business and entrepreneurial ventures, he also deeply enjoyed many aspects of life: gaming, fitness, nature, traveling, and faith. Whether it be local poker games or Las Vegas outings, Ski Club trips or exotic vacations, or just daily workouts. Always intellectually curious and in search of different adventures, Kirk actively engaged life, traveling far and wide mixing in his various interests and passions all while enjoying good food, fine wine, and good times with all his friends and family along the way.
But of all his many interests and ventures, his true lifelong passion project was always coins. Kirk was a collector and “dealer” to his core – wine, stamps, art deco, jewelry, antiques, pin ball machines, and of course … coins. So many coins. As a child in Corpus, Kirk and his mother, Rita, would spend hours sifting through heavy bags of coins (lugged home from the bank by older brother Steve) hunting for hidden treasures. He continued that hunt the rest of his life. But more than collecting, Kirk immersed himself in coins. His unflagging willingness to share his expertise, mentor young collectors, and grow the numismatic community leaves a lasting legacy.
Kirk was a kind, decent, generous, brilliant, loving man who will be dearly missed by both his family and the vast array of cherished friends he leaves behind. While we who loved him take solace in the knowledge that he has found peace and comfort, we also must acknowledge that the world is a lesser place that he is no longer in it.
Kirk was preceded by his wife, Monika Menczer; his parents, Sam W. and Rita Menczer; In-laws William Johnson and Clara Koepsel; sister-in-laws, Sandy Menczer, Mary Johnson and brother-in-law Michael King
He is survived by his brother, Stephen E. Menczer; sister-in-law, Michelle Luna; brother-in-law William Johnson; his three nephews: Stephen J.
