Kristina Kathleen Garcia was a fighter from the very beginning. Born in Naples, Italy to Gerardo and Darlene Garcia, and raised in San Antonio, Texas, and Colorado Springs, Colorado, she lived her life with fierce independence and unyielding determination. Born with cerebral palsy, Kristina never allowed it to define her. Instead, it strengthened her resolve to chart her own course and live life entirely on her own terms. She was determined never to depend on others, and through courage and sheer will, she built a life defined by self-reliance, dignity, and purpose.
After graduating from Mitchell High School in Colorado and the University of Texas at San Antonio, Kristina devoted herself to teaching at Holy Name Catholic School in San Antonio. For 30 years, she poured her heart into her students, shaping young minds and encouraging them not only to learn, but to believe in themselves. She showed up every day with quiet toughness and unwavering commitment. She was the kind of teacher whose influence extended far beyond the classroom, not just teaching lessons, but living them. Through her example, she showed generations of students what perseverance truly meant.
Kristina had a special love for lighthouses, steadfast beacons that guide others safely through darkness. It is a fitting symbol, because she was that kind of presence in the lives of those who loved her, steady, strong, and unwavering. She was a devoted Denver Broncos fan, loyal throughout every season, and she found joy in life’s simple pleasures, including a perfectly cooked plate of spaghetti.
Her favorite place in the world was San Francisco; a city whose beauty and spirit resonated deeply with her. It is there that her ashes will be scattered, a final return to a place that brought her peace.
In her final days, Kristina fought with extraordinary strength. What doctors believed might be only days became a remarkable demonstration of resilience and grace. She was surrounded by those who loved her most, and she was never alone. She knew she was loved.
Kristina lived fully and fiercely. She accomplished what she set out to do and faced every challenge with courage. The world is dimmer without her strength in it, but her spirit endures in the lives she touched and the example she set. She would want those she loved to keep moving forward, to keep living fully, and to never stop fighting.
She is home now. Dad was waiting.
Kristina is survived by her mothers, Darlene Garcia and Christa Dail; her siblings, Kimberly Bales; Scott Garcia and his wife, Lourdes Garcia; Stephen “Randy” Garcia and his wife, Lauren Littlefield Garcia; and Erik Dail and his wife, Kristin Dail; her nephew, Joey Bales and his wife, Jenn Bales; her nieces, Jessica Garcia and Tori Garcia; her step sister, Teresita Halbardier; and her friend of 40 years, Kathy Cooper.
