Laura Newton Barber, born August 24, 1943, died peacefully, on October 27, 2021. Growing up in San Antonio, graduated from Keystone School. Married to the love of her life Marvin (Sonny) Barber for 36 years; they had a passion for sailing on Canyon Lake. Lauras great joy was her daughter, Mary Heather. She looked forward to being with Heather and her husband, Alan Palestine when they came to visit from their home in Colorado.
Heather says, "The greatest gift my mother gave me was insisting I have a voice. As a child, she encouraged me to advocate for myself; to speak up instead of remaining silent."
"Laura was a quiet talent, never putting herself ahead, wanting to stay in the background," is how her sister, Carol Black remembers her. Younger sister, Willard Samuel, "Laura was direct, she said what she wanted." Willard remembers they were each others sounding boards. Another sister, Charlotte Safir recalls Laura loved art and family history. "She had the most beautiful blue eyes." Nieces, Amy Rychlik and Charlotte Samuel have fond memories. Amy shared, "Aunt Laura never forgot a birthday. I loved her stories. I spent hours watching Disney movies from her massive collection." Charlotte remembers, "Laura was so relatable, giving me support; being nonjudgement and empathic when I went through challenging times."
Laura will be missed by brother in laws, Rod Black and Chuck Samuel as well as her numerous nieces and nephews and grandnieces and grandnephew.
